Accumulations obsess me. The number of stars in the sky, the number of carbon dioxide molecules in the atmosphere and the number of people on the planet are the impetus for my work. My work investigates the ideas of presence, accumulation and proliferation.
I have been engaged in this particular body of work since 2008 and I am looking to expand my range of expression. I am continuing to develop a visual form language to investigate my ideas of accumulation, proliferation and what it may mean to be an individual within the many. These accumulations, manifesting themselves in various media, are a process of slow accretion. Accumulations and proliferations have duel nature in that they can be a celebration of abundance or an overwhelming deluge. For example: there are more bacteria cells than human cells in the human body. I am a colony. How can I communicate this visually? I have been thinking about McLuhan’s “The medium is the message.” Can this thought be expanded beyond the human frame of reference to the very units of the universe itself? If the universe is the medium, what is the message?
